The Artful Side of Gifting

There are some truly beautiful options for wrapping paper and gift bags for the holiday season. One of my personal favorites is Rifle Paper Co., but the maker instinct in me always sees the holiday season as a perfect time to hone my skills and create my own lovely gift wrap! There are tons of ways you can make your own gift wrap, but my favorite lately has been using simple brown postal paper and adding details with paint or ribbon. Here’s a few I’ve been working on!

  • Brown postal paper
  • Gouache
  • Brushes
  • Ribbon

Cut some fairly large sheets of paper. Use some coasters or other objects to hold them in place on a table or the floor while you paint. Once dry, they shouldn’t curl anymore.

You can use stencils or free hand designs. I recommend painting with gouache – like watercolor, but more opaque – because it paints smooth and a little goes a long way.

You can paint craft paper bags as well!

It’s also really easy to make your own gift tags. (If you need a quick tutorial for doing your own calligraphy, click here.) I just used some watercolors on watercolor paper and sharpie to make this festive bunch!

Do you ever make your own gift wrap? What’s been your favorite this season?
