A round-up of some of my favorite taco spots in Chicago!
Rubi’s at Maxwell Street Market – University Village
Starting this list with the best. For real. Best tacos I’ve ever had, and I love their definition of a quesadilla (taco with a huge slab of grilled queso inside). They make the corn tortillas fresh right in front of you, the tacos are humongous (about twice the size of most places) and super inexpensive. The downside? You can only get them on Sundays at the Maxwell Street Market and you’re almost always going to wait in line. Even if it’s an hour, it’s worth it! *Cash only*
Favorite item: The al pastor quesadilla!
Velvet Taco – River North
Velvet taco makes some yummy items, and I do really like their creativity with flavors. They aren’t afraid to stray from traditional tacos. For example, that chicken tikka masala taco!
Favorite item: rotisserie chicken taco
La Pasadita – multiple locations
This place isn’t fancy, but their tacos draws lines at all hours of the day. You can try other items here, but you’ll always come back for the carne asada tacos. And maybe some horchata.
Favorite items: horchata and carne asada (in taco or nacho form!)
Antique Taco – Wicker Park
Definitely a “trendy” spot, but they back it up with their menu and delicious margaritas. Fresh ingredients, crispy chips and refreshing drinks, plus a patio make this a great option for a girl’s night or casual date night!
Favorite item: pork carnitas taco
Turbo Tacos – Logan Square
Oooh this place is good. It’s everything you want in a taco spot: fast, friendly, cheap, and with allllll the fixins. Make sure you ask for everything on your taco because the avocado and queso fresco take those carne asada tacos to the next level! And be sure to drink a jarritos with it too. If you eat in you’ll get treated to endless chips and salsa.
Favorite taco – carne asada
Big Star – Wicker Park
One of the first tacos I had when I moved to Chicago, I’ve always been a big fan of Big Star. Their patio space is wonderful, their food is delicious, and they’re easy to get to (right off the Damen blue line stop). They get busy on the weekends, but have a separate BYOB patio with window service if you just need a quick taco fix.
Favorite items: El Pollo taco, pescado tacos, and guacamole!
Where else have you tried tacos in Chicago? Share your favorites!
Cheers!
